Performance on corporate websites: speed is a design decision

A slow site is usually the result of decisions made at the design stage, not the developer’s. Where should you step in?

Page speed is often thought of as a post-development optimisation job. Yet most of what determines load time is fixed the moment the design is approved: how many typefaces are used, whether there is a video in the hero, how many images sit on the first screen.

Limit the number of typefaces

Every extra weight and style means another file to download. Two families and three weights cover everything a corporate site needs.

Keep the first screen light

When the first area a user sees is mostly text, perceived speed rises noticeably. Moving heavy images further down brings measurable gains without compromising the design.

You can’t improve what you don’t measure

After launch, track performance with real user data. Lab tests are a good start, but field data shows what your mobile users actually experience.

Let’s talk about a similar problem.
