Scalable architecture: solving today without making tomorrow expensive
Architecture decisions made early on determine your development speed three years later. What to watch out for.
Scalability isn’t only about carrying more users; it’s also about how quickly you can add a new feature. In most enterprise projects, this second meaning matters more.
Avoid premature abstraction
Layers built for flexibility nobody needs yet make code hard to read. Don’t generalise until a real second use case appears.
Draw boundaries around data
The split between modules should follow data ownership, not the team org chart. Boundaries drawn in the wrong place turn every change into a multi-module operation.
Don’t leave observability for later
If logging, metrics and monitoring aren’t in place from the first release, you’ll have no data when the first serious performance issue hits. It is one of the most expensive pieces to add after the fact.
